I photographed Road Prong in the
Great Smoky Mountains National Park on a dark overcast July morning. Before the park
was created, a toll road across the mountains, called the Oconaluftee Turnpike, ran along
this creek. A horse and rider were charged 6¢; cows cost 2¢ each. Now it is
wilderness again. The only traffic is bears and hikers, who pass through for free.
