When we arrived at our cabin in the mountains of New Mexico in mid-April 2010, the area around was a mosaic of dry land and snow pack. I filled the bird feeder with seed, and in two days had about 20 juncos, most of whom were the 'gray-headed' race of the Rocky Mountains. They were, like juncos everywhere, quite tame. I put seed on the snow covering the open part of our deck, and soon the juncos were nonchalantly landing on it and eating seed a mere 10 feet away.
