My Ruby-throated Hummingbird on its perch looks a lot
like my Broad-tailed Hummingbird from the Rocky Mountains. But looks
can be deceiving. According to the DNA, the Ruby-throat's closest
relative is the Black-chinned Hummingbird of Texas and the Southwest.
This bird was defending a feeder in mid-August at Olen Thomas' house here in
Stillwater. At that time Ruby-throats are avidly feeding on sugar
water and nectar in
preparation for their migration back to Central and South America.
