The temperature was near 100ºF when I photographed this Horned Lark on the high treeless plains of eastern Colorado.  You know it's bad when you see birds sitting in a row on the ground in the meager shade offered by a fence post.   I rolled down the window of my air-conditioned car, took the photo, and quickly rolled the window back up.
